Whether you are playing indoors or outdoors, your basketball is almost constantly under heavy stress. Most people rarely maintain their basketballs properly, and even fewer people store them as they should. One of the tidiest and simplest ways to organize these balls is to use a ball rack. These are made specifically for sports balls and can often accommodate football, soccer, volleyball, and other types of balls.
In this guide, we will go through some of the best basketball storage racks, explain their differences, and point out their pros and cons. Further down the article, I will also give you a checklist of features that will make shopping for a ball rack much easier. Now, let’s jump straight into this!

Best Overall – BSN Sports Ball Cart Wide Base
The BSN Sports Ball Cart is one of your best options if you are looking for a sturdy, durable, and practical rack. It also doesn’t hurt that it comes at a bargain price, especially when compared to other racks with similar capacity.
The whole frame of this rack is made out of steel which is powder-coated for better long-term durability. And while it isn’t stainless steel, it is still perfectly suitable for indoor gyms and basketball courts. The powder coating doesn’t chip away like on some other cheaper models and keeps the steel safe from potential rust. In terms of the overall design, the rack is quite straight-forward. It has three rows that can each hold up to 4 basketballs comfortably. The support bars aren’t very far apart from each other, making the rack also suitable for other types of sports balls. The base of the rack is also relatively wide, preventing topping over.
Another great feature here is the fact that this rack comes with four casters on each end. They are non-marring and are made out of hard rubber. This makes them ideal for wooden floors and delicate finished surfaces. As a whole, for this price, there are few options that might be worth your time and consideration. From this list, the Cmapro 12 Ball Rack has similar characteristics but is a bit more expensive, making it a worse bang for your buck.
- Great bang for your buck
- Can hold up to 12 balls
- No-topple base
- Powder-coated steel frame
- Easy to move around
- Non-marring wheels
- The support bars need to be tightened from time to time
- The legs aren’t super sturdy
Best Budget – Rubbermaid FastTrack Garage Storage Vertical Ball Rack
Sometimes the traditional design of most racks out there simply doesn’t work. Some people don’t have the space for a horizontal ball rack, especially one that moves around. That’s why vertical racks are as common as horizontal ones and can be found in both gyms and homes. The Rubbermaid FastTrack Garage Storage Vertical Ball Rack is not only a super practical rack for your sports balls but is also one of the cheapest racks out there.
The rack features a long vertical frame made out of thin steel tubes connected at the top and bottom. At the front, instead of steel tubes, you have two bungee cords that are sturdy and are used to hold the balls in place. They can be easily put to the side when you want to put a ball in and out. At the top, you have a hook system that can either be hanged on something or you can drill two holes in the wall to hold the rack in place. It can hold up to 4 large basketballs or 5 smaller ones.
In conclusion, this rack is a perfect option for people that don’t have as many balls and want to buy something of good quality on the cheap. It is by far one of the cheapest options on this list and can be used for football, basketball, volleyball, and other types of balls. On top of that, the brand manufactures a ton of other garage accessories that will help you tidy things up!
- Steel construction
- Two bungee cords upfront
- Can be hanged or wall-mounted
- Great for homes
- Cannot fit more than 4 large basketballs
- Not ideal for gyms and larger courts
- If put outdoors it can rust
Easy to Move – Champro 12 Ball Rack With Casters
Another very similar to the BSN Sports rack is the Champro 12-ball upright rack with casters. It is a bit more expensive while sharing many of the features of the BSN model, making it a slightly worse deal for your money. However, its casters are comparatively better and the chrome finish on the frame will add up to the long-term durability, so that sort of explains the higher price tag.
The rack uses a steel tubing frame just like almost all rack models out there. In this price class, it is rare to see aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum is easy to bend and these racks often have to be both lightweight and durable, so steel is a somewhat good compromise. The design is quite familiar with a wide base and narrow top part. The assembly process takes a few minutes and can be done by a single person. When fully set up, the rack can hold 12 regulation-sized basketballs without any problems. The casters are non-marring and move freely in all directions, making this rack quite portable and excellent for shooting drills. This also makes it ideal for schools, leagues, and general storage of all types of sports balls.
- Holds up to 12 full-sized basketballs
- Heavy-duty construction
- Easy to assemble
- Has 4 casters
- Excellent for 3-point contests
- A bit expensive
- The frame can bend if under too much pressure
Best Wall-Mounted – Wallniture Punto Basketball Wall-Mount Display Rack
While most basketball storage racks out there are either vertical, upright, or horizontal, there are still some wall-mounted models that can be used for homes or single-ball owners. The Wallniture Punto Basketball Holder Wall Mount is a 2-sectional display rack that is perfect for basketballs, footballs, and other types of balls people use for sports. Unlike other cheap wall-mounted models, this one features a beautiful wooden design with two steel rings that are wide enough to hold your basketballs in a deep and sturdy way.
With a capacity for only two basketballs, this is one of the smallest racks on this list. However, it is also one of the cheapest and offers a great way to store your basketballs without having to burn a hole through your pocket and getting a bulky storage rack.
In your package, you get the wooden board, two (metal) racks, a lot of metal anchors, and steel screws, as well as the installation guide. The whole assembly process takes minutes and where you install the rack itself is entirely up to you. Since it won’t hold a ton of weight, putting it on drywall isn’t going to be an issue.
- Great design
- Wood/steel materials
- Excellent for home use
- Easy to install
- Great price
- Can hold other sports balls too
- Not great for people with more than just a few balls
- Will need to drill the wall to install it
Best Ball Locker – Trigon Sports Procage HD Secure Ball Locker
Basketball storage racks all share one common flaw – they aren’t secure enough if you want to keep your basketballs out of reach. That is why there are racks that come with a lockable hatch. These are called ball lockers and the best one on the market right now is the Trigon Sports Procage HD Secure Ball Locker. It features a durable construction made out of 1-inch powder-coated steel tubes. They go all around the locker removing any possibility for a ball getting out. Thanks to the powder coating, long-term durability shouldn’t really be an issue.
On top of being super secure, this locker can also fit the most amount of basketballs from all the models I’ve included in this list. When full, it fits around 30 regulation-sized basketballs or many smaller ones. It also works for footballs, soccer balls, and more, as long as the ball isn’t smaller than the space between every two bars. And since the locker is quite heavy when full, there are 4 casters on each end. These do make moving the locker around a bit easier but aren’t the smoothest wheels out there, meaning they can potentially damage wooden surfaces if the rack is full. Another disadvantage of this particular model is that it is pricier than most other racks. Still, if you account for the number of balls it can fit, the price is halfway decent.
- Powder-coated steel construction
- Quite durable
- Lockable hatch
- 4 casters
- Can fit up to 30 balls
- Works with all sorts of sports balls
- The casters can mar fine wooden surfaces
- Bulky and heavy
Best Vertical Ball Rack – Knape & Vogt John Sterling Sports Rack
The Knape & Vogt John Sterling Sports Rack is one of the best vertical models out there. It is perfect for tight spots as it takes a narrow but tall space in any storage room. It is also great for garages with free vertical space. While it works perfectly for basketballs, this rack can work with essentially any type of sports ball. Each individual wire bracket can hold up to 20 lbs and is wide enough for most soccer balls and footballs. The number of racks here is 7, resulting in a decent basketball capacity both for homes and school gyms.
The whole construction of this rack is made out of steel and is quite sturdy. The installation process is also fairly simple, although attaching this rack to your wall is up to you. Another thing that I love about this rack is that it is incredibly cheap. In this price range, most racks have a capacity of 1-3 balls, while this more than doubles it, making it one of the best bangs for your buck out there.
- Great price
- Holds 7 basketballs
- Easy to assemble
- Steel construction
- Bottom brackets are perfect for children
- Works with other sports balls
- The tallest wire brackets are hard to reach for children
- Not very sturdy
Best For Single Ball – Wallniture Sporta Wall Mounted Sports Ball Holder
Last on this list is the Wallniture Sporta Wall Mounted Sports Ball Holder Rack. It is the only model on this list that is made specifically to house one single basketball. Thanks to that, it is incredibly practical, small in size, and most importantly – cheap. In other words, if you are tight on money, this is the rack that will do its job perfectly and cost you close to nothing. Still, If you have more than just one basketball but you still want a stylish wall-mounted rack, I highly suggest getting the Wallniture Punto.
This rack is made out of a flat steel base that you attach to your wall. That base is linked to a 7.3-inch ball holder that will allow most regulation-sized basketballs to sink deeply into it. Assembly and installation are dead-easy and the powder-coated finish on the steel construction will ensure long-lasting durability. Lastly, the Sporta Rack comes in two color options – black and white, with each costing the same. In conclusion, this is the perfect rack for anyone that wants to have a place for the basketball in his room without having to put it in the corner every time.
- Very easy to install
- Super cheap
- Perfect for people with one basketball
- Can fit anywhere
- Durable steel construction
- 7.3 inches ball holder
- Comes in two colors
- Not ideal for people with multiple basketballs
- Can be bent if you apply too much pressure
Basketball Storage Racks Buyer’s Guide
Despite the somewhat similar design and look, ball storage racks tend to have quite a few differences. To learn how to make the best pick for our basketballs, we first need to go through the different types of racks out there and all of the features that can shape the rack’s overall practicality.
Types of Basketball Storage Racks
There are three main types of storage options for your basketballs. These are:
- Wall-mounted storage racks – These racks tend to be smaller than the other two types and often hold up to 3 balls. And while they are much cheaper, they are hard to install and will have a permanent location once you attach them to any wall.
- Storage Cages (or Ball Lockers) – While not technically “racks”, these ball cages allow you to store quite a lot of (different type) balls in the place. Moreover, there is a lid you can close with a locker on it. That adds a ton of security and prevents students or other people from taking any balls without permission. Most of these ball lockers also have wheels for easier transport. Their major disadvantage is that they are usually a bit more expensive than the other type of racks.
- Portable Storage Racks – Almost all storage racks that aren’t wall-mounted have wheels and are, therefore, much more portable. There are some stationary ones that can be bolted to the floor of your gym but I generally don’t recommend these, as they are too restrictive. Most of these portable racks are aluminum and can hold upwards of 10 balls. That makes them super versatile, even if they aren’t typically very cheap.
Now, let’s take a look at all the features that you need to pay attention to when picking your ball rack…
Features To Look For
Out of all the features that categorize a ball rack as good, the ones you should focus your attention on are:
- Size & Capacity
Let’s take a closer look at each of those features now and see what role they play in the overall practicality and usability of any basketball storage rack out there.
Size & Capacity
This is one of the first and most obvious things you should look at in a ball rack. How many basketballs it can fit is also one of the main features companies showcase when releasing a new product. Most racks are geared more towards high-school gymnasiums with larger capacities of over 15 balls. As a whole, basketballs are among the larges sports balls out there and tend to take up a ton of space. Look for a rack that will safely accommodate as many balls as you have. This means for the rack to have deeper channels and not let the balls fall off whenever you move the rack around.
With wall-mounted racks, size and weight are also key factors. If you are going to attach them to drywall, make sure that the rack won’t be too heavy, otherwise, you risk it falling down. That’s why I generally recommend single-ball wall-mounted racks and stationary or portable racks if you plan on storing more than just one sports ball. If you’re tight on space, you can opt for a vertical rack. These tend to be quite slender and can hold much more weight than horizontal wall-mounted racks.
Materials-wise, ball storage racks are pretty straight-forward. There are three materials you can choose from and they will mainly determine the price of the rack itself. These materials are normal steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. For wall-mounted and portable stands I’d recommend aluminum as it is the lightest. Still, if you want something much more rigid and durable, stainless steel is the way to go. Both of these materials are expensive, though, so if you’re on a budget, normal steel is also good. In fact, if your rack is going to remain indoors, rust will never be a concern. This means that a normal steel rack is as good as a stainless steel one for most indoor conditions.
In terms of portability, the wheels are the major factor. Most large racks have wheels on them that allow them to be moved around the court when you’re practicing your basketball shooting fundamentals. Some more expensive models will have lockable wheels. These are a much better alternative compared to stationary racks but will also be much more expensive, so it all ultimately boils down to your budget. If you just want a rack to keep your balls at night, you don’t have to go for one with wheels, though.
How easy a rack is to install is only valid for wall-mounted models. Other models typically come pre-assembled from the factory and you only have to tighten a few screws or attach the wheels if there are any. Wall-mounted racks should come with everything you need to put them on any wall, although you will need a drilling tool to do that. Some ball lockers are a bit more difficult to fully assemble. For these models, there will be detailed instructions in their package.
While the price of the ball rack is definitely not its differentiating factor it should play a role in your decision. As I already pointed out, wheels and stainless steel bulk up the price by quite a lot. They are, however, pointless features on an indoor rack that will never be moved around or really exposed to heat and moisture. These are the times you can save some money and go for the lower-trim models that won’t have bells and whistles such as lockable wheels and perfect welds on their stainless steel frame.

Storage Racks Benefits
Whether you have a few basketballs at home or are a coach in a local high school gym, having a ball rack by your side brings plenty of benefits. Some of the main ones are:
- Having a basketball rack on your court saves space and time. Having all of your basketballs in the same place is a great advantage for every coach. Moreover, teaching your players to return the balls there makes for an even tidier gym.
- These racks protect the basketballs from unnecessary damage. This is especially valid if they are being used outdoors.
- Some racks allow you to store up to 15-20 basketballs. There is no other method that will make moving that many balls as easy.
- Some racks double as ball lockers and will also keep the balls safe during the off-hours.
- Having all the balls on the rack will also keep them clean when they aren’t used.
- Fewer balls will roll around the court, reducing the chances of accidental injuries.
- Having a ball rack with a large capacity will make training your shooting drills much easier as you won’t have to chase every ball.
Storage aside, even if it is generally enough to prolong its life, knowing how to clean and maintain it at the same time will also prove useful. Moreover, it is something you should consider if you use your ball for outdoor games or play regularly with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should my ball rack have wheels?
Wheeled basketball ball racks are common in gymnasiums where the ball capacity is around 10-15. These racks tend to get heavy and are, therefore, hard to move around. When picking a rack with wheels, make sure you pick softer wheels that won’t damage the court’s surface.
What is the best material for a ball rack?
While aluminum models are more and more common due to their weight advantage, steel racks are still king when it comes to durability. If you’re picking a steel rack, go for stainless steel models, as the others tend to rust rather fast.
Can you use basketball storage racks for other things?
Yes, you can store all sorts of sports balls on these racks, as long as they fit. That’s why most racks have a third supporting bar that sits in the gap between the main two bars. That way, you can store smaller-sized balls. Additionally, many players use them for their towels and other game-related items during training.
Knowing how to pick the best basketball storage racks will allow you to make a much more educated and easier choice. While these ball racks vary in a lot of aspects, try to look for something that will do a good job for your needs. If you have plenty of basketballs to tend to, get a rack with a larger volume. If you need to train shooting drills, get a more portable rack that will be able to follow you around the court. Look for sturdy frame materials such as high-grade aluminum and stainless steel.
